Leadership Team Misalignment: Signs You May Miss
Misalignment does not usually arrive as a crisis. It creeps in like sea smoke on an autumn afternoon.
A decision takes longer than expected. A handoff gets missed. One team waits while another moves ahead. The new system sits idle.
Then comes the familiar sentence: “I thought we agreed on this.”
Most organizations respond by adding more. Another meeting. Another tracker. Another process. Another clarification memo. Noise increases, but progress does not. And people get very good at working around the confusion.
That is what makes misalignment hard to spot. The organization keeps functioning. Services continue. Reports get filed. But underneath the busy-ness, people are wasting time interpreting priorities, protecting turf, and trying to decide which version of the message to follow.
Employees often notice before leadership names it. They hear mixed messages. They see some decisions enforced and while others become optional. Then they adjust their behaviour accordingly. Not because they do not care, but because uncertainty encourages self-protection.
Misalignment is not always a communication failure. It is often a leadership discipline problem. And it can be hard to see when you are sitting inside it.
Next week, I am sharing a free five-minute tool to help you take an honest look at how aligned your team is. It will not measure intentions. It will look at team behaviours.
P.S. This week, I encourage you to think about where your team may be creating workarounds in the absence of clarity.
